In addition to the performance from Tommy Baker, there were also demonstrations from ‘Speed Stacks' which attracted the attention of interested onlookers. Sport speed stacking is the latest craze taking hold of schools across the county. It helps to develop skills for sport proficiency such as hand-eye co-ordination and improving the ability to use both hands effectively (ambidexterity). Both were enjoyed by the younger spectators, and passers-by were invited to join in. Yow's longtime oncologist says the 64-year-old coach will rejoin the team this week. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and left the team in November after doctors found her cancer was progressing. Yow is in her 32nd season as head coach. She was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001 and coached the U-S women's team to a gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. But the Eagles have covered hundreds more miles together, accomplishing much more as a group than winning basketball games. Coach Tommy Kyle took his team on a trip to the Dominican Republic in July through SCORE International, a church-affiliated sports missions ministry of which Kyle is the vice president. Flying Dutch coach Brian Morehouse said their biggest test to date awaits them this week, when Hope hosts Albion. The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals square off Tuesday at the DeVos Fieldhouse in a 7:30 p.m. game. Morehouse said one key to the game will be how well Hope's underclassmen react to conference pressure. Hope swept Albion in the two meetings last year, but the Britons swept Hope in 2005 and won two of the three games in 2004 and 2002. The Flying Dutch's talented freshmen include Philana Greene, Emily O'Hare and Jenny Cowen, each averaging nearly 15 minutes a game. There's never a problem with the first four words: "What's goin' on with... "I'm on the hardwood now," he says. Again and again and again. You think it's easy being a Division I prospect in the main two sports? Well, believe it or not, for Seth Evans, playing and producing in impressive fashion are much more of a snap than getting hit with nonstop questions. The list had been valued at $40,000 and was set to be sold in a highly publicized auction in Dallas on Friday, but the grandson of basketball's inventor called foul on the document. And he used a typewriter ribbon as part of his offense. Ian Naismith - grandson of basketball creator Dr. James Naismith - said the dual-color ribbon used to type the list didn't exist in 1891, the year the first game of basketball was played and when the document is thought to have been written by his grandfather. "I'm going to guess it was typed somewhere between 1915 and 1925," Naismith said.

Weisbrod: Basketball is a funny game

It's only November, but the biggest programs from Wisconsin and Minnesota have already felt the madness usually reserved for March.Wisconsin has already been upset, Marquette has played spoiler and Minnesota is just rotten.Three different schools, three different high-level NCAA Division I programs that have all proven one thing: in basketball, it's anyone's game. The Badgers enter the season with the highest of expectations. The Big Ten title is supposed to go through Madison this season as Wisconsin was ranked in every preseason top-10 poll. Someone must have forgotten run this by Missouri State. The undefeated and seventh-ranked Badgers of the Big Ten met up with the Bears of the Missouri Valley Conference on Nov. 24 in the South Padre Island Invite. Even though this proclaimed "mid-major" school comes from a conference that sent two teams to the Sweet 16 last season Bradley and Wichita State it still came as a surprise to many when MSU prevailed 66-64.Some call it a minor upset, but the Bears were not even ranked in the top-50 before the game started.

Thanksgiving thoughts from Women's Basketball

The Texas women's basketball team, 4-1 and ranked No. 25 to start the season, took a break from basketball this week to focus on academics before the Thanksgiving holiday. The Longhorns will return to practice on Thursday morning Thanksgiving before gathering for a special Thanksgiving team meal. The Longhorns remained in Austin for the Thanksgiving holiday to prepare for Saturday's game (Nov. 25) against the 4-0 Oral Roberts Golden Eagles. That game takes place at 2 p.m. at the Frank Erwin Center. Earlier in the week, the team reflected on their favorites dishes from Thanksgivings past and talked about what they are most appreciative and thankful for this Thanksgiving Day 2006. My favorite dish/part of Thanksgiving dinner is .... Senior Tiffany Jackson: the desserts - anything but chocolate desserts especially sweet potato pie and pecan pie Sophomore Ashley Lindsey: I have no favorite I love everything on the table and probably will eat four plates full of it all! Sophomore Mari Mergerson: our family tradition of making a special wine toast to start the meal Freshman Kristen Nash: my Mom's deviled eggs and her chocolate chip pumpkin bread! Redshirt freshman Carla Cortijo: my grandmother Luz Nydia's turkey and potato salad Sophomore Crystal Boyd: my Daddy's dressing, sweet potato pie and chitterlings Freshman Niqky Hughes: cranberry sauce- the jelly kind (not whole berries) Sophomore Aubry Cook: fried turkey and my Mom's best friend Cloretta's three-cheese macaroni and cheese! Junior Erneisha Bailey: my Mom's candied yams, and asparagus casserole Freshman Brittainey Raven: chitlings (or chitterlings) Sophomore Erika Arriaran: my "Momma's (grandmother Elsa) green rice that's all I want to eat! Freshman Gabriell Mattox: my godmother Dorothy's sweet potato pie and the dressing that my Mom makes with my two aunts her sisters Daphne and Tammie Sophomore Earnesia Williams: the turkey and my Momma's sweet potatoe pie with marshmallows on top! Senior Katrina Robinson: turkey and dinner rolls, and my Aunt Lois' macaroni and cheese Assistant coach Kathy Harston: my sister Kim's dressing the best ever! Sparc (Sport and Recreation New Zealand) today said it would invest in 17 sports that submitted applications for contestable high performance investment in 2007 and beyond. Of that, basketball will get $1.18m, hockey $1.15m, paralympics $970,000, canoeing $700,000 and equestrian $600,000 - $4.6m - or 82 percent -- of the total funding. Six sports that applied for funding came up empty handed - golf, gymsports, motorsport, rugby league, table tennis, university sport and tennis. Sparc chief executive Nick Hill said he could understand some sports would be disappointed. USA Basketball promised $3 million to FIBA Americas, a figure that ultimately beat out Puerto Rico's bid. FIBA Americas also, in a release late Sunday night from its headquarters in San Juan, cited the commercial impact of having the "FIBA brand with the NBA," as a deciding factor. The event was originally awarded to Venezuela, but the bid was taken away after the Venezuelan organizing committee was late on payments in August. ESPN.com learned that USA Basketball would have had a problem going to Venezuela because of the country's anti-American government. But Dallas Mavericks fans may not want to tune in, as the Miami Heat host the Chicago Bulls at 7 p.m. on TNT. Rubbing more salt into the wound: TNT will also feature coverage of the Heat's ring ceremony, according to NBA.com. The second Halloween game features two-time league MVP Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns visiting Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers. Tip-off is set for 9:30. When a few preseason Top 25 teams turn out to be NIT bound, it can be a heavy blow for many of the teams they faced. Still, there are a few programs that won't have anything to worry about.
