Who says basketball isn'ta contact sport? Concussions are ...

As Chestatee High freshman basketball player Jaymee Carnes hit the floor last Friday night in a game against Lumpkin County, it was a repeat scenario that has played out all too often this season in the girls game. Carnes was just the latest player to suffer a concussion during action joining a laundry list of players in Hall County this season to experience the same head injury. Carnes' particular injury came as a result of contact from the knee of an opposing player just below her eye as she went to the floor for a loose ball. After the injury, Carnes remained on the floor for a couple of minutes, and was carried off the floor to have her condition evaluated. She was held out of action the next night against Greater Atlanta Christian as a medical precaution. "She'll go through light exercises today (Monday) to see if she can play (tonight) against North Hall," War Eagles coach Web Daniel said.

Basketball freestyler promotes sport to Cheshunt shoppers

In a bid to get the residents of Broxbourne more active, Broxbourne Council, with the Herts Sports Partnership were at the Brookfield Centre on Friday 5 January with basketball freestyler Tommy Baker to promote sport and physical activity for all ages. In addition to the performance from Tommy Baker, there were also demonstrations from ‘Speed Stacks' which attracted the attention of interested onlookers. Sport speed stacking is the latest craze taking hold of schools across the county. It helps to develop skills for sport proficiency such as hand-eye co-ordination and improving the ability to use both hands effectively (ambidexterity). Both were enjoyed by the younger spectators, and passers-by were invited to join in. The day was an entertaining start to the New Year and the event took place to support the ‘Get Active' promotion organised by the Herts Sports Partnership alongside Broxbourne Council and other key partners.

Decatur Heritage basketball team grows closer with off-the-court deeds

The farthest the Decatur Heritage boys basketball team will travel for a game this season was a 41-mile trip to Tharptown in Franklin County on Dec. 5. But the Eagles have covered hundreds more miles together, accomplishing much more as a group than winning basketball games. Coach Tommy Kyle took his team on a trip to the Dominican Republic in July through SCORE International, a church-affiliated sports missions ministry of which Kyle is the vice president. In addition to that trip, the team had the bonding experience of a road trip to Columbia, S.C., to watch the Gamecocks play Kansas on Jan. 7. "It's been a great springboard for this year and all the troubles we've faced," Kyle said. " ... It's not all about winning a basketball game." Decatur Heritage hasn't played with its entire squad at full speed all season.
